Swedish PM blasts media over sex
Swedish Prime Minister Goran Persson has taken a swipe at the Swedish media, accusing it of using images of scantily-clad women to boost sales.
He said the government was examining ways of "sanitising" the media, which could include new legislation.
Sweden has recently been declared the country with the world's smallest economic divide between the genders.
But Mr Persson said that was not a good reason to "lean back and consider our work finished".
"Wherever you go in Sweden today, you see pictures of young women nearly undressed," he said in his address to a Social Democrat women's congress.
"We must distance ourselves from this degrading... almost pornographic offering which we see in certain media."
British 'model'
Mr Persson also warned that Swedish tabloids appeared to be going "in the same direction as those in Britain" - a clear reference to the Sun's trademark "page three", featuring a picture of a bare-breasted woman.
He said that the government was planning a review for later this year and might resort to new regulations - a prospect that Swedish tabloid Aftonbladet has already decried as "censorship".
"Limits on the freedom of speech and what should be printed in the media are not compatible with our democratic values," the paper's editor-in-chief wrote on the newspaper's website.
A survey published at the World Economic Forum in Jordan earlier this week found that Sweden had the smallest economic gender gap in the world - but Mr Persson was adamant that more needed to be done.
"Our country is still not equal," he said.

US chastity ring funding attacked
The American Civil Liberties Union has filed a lawsuit against the US government over its funding of a nationwide sexual abstinence programme.
The ACLU says the Silver Ring Thing programme violates the principle that the state budget cannot be used to promote religion.
The programme, which targets teenagers, is an offshoot of a Christian ministry. Since 2003, it has received more than $1m from the Department of Health and Human Services.
Symbolic ring
The funding is part of a government initiative to expand abstinence-only sex education.
Although many government grant recipients have religious affiliations, they are not supposed to use the federal money for religious proselytising.
The lawsuit, filed in federal court in Boston, alleges that the Silver Ring Thing uses grant money to encourage young people to commit themselves to Jesus Christ.
"The courts have repeatedly said taxpayer dollars cannot be used to promote religion," said Julie Sternberg, an attorney with the ACLU's Reproductive Freedom Project.
"The Silver Ring Thing blatantly violates this principle."
Adherents to the programme wear a silver ring as a sign of their commitment to refrain from having sex until marriage.
The ACLU has complained that the programme's official rings are inscribed with verses from the Bible, 1 Thessalonians 4, 3-4, reading: "God wants you to be holy, so you should keep clear of all sexual sin. Then each of you will control your body and live in holiness and honour."
Chris Downing, a spokesman for the Department of Health and Human Services, told the Associated Press news agency that the department did not comment on pending litigation.
Denny Pattyn, the Silver Ring Thing's founder and president, issued a statement describing the programme as "faith-based", but said that the federal funds had been properly used at all times, the AP news agency reported.
The suit names only the Department of Health and Human Services officials, not the Silver Ring Thing, as defendants, and seeks to halt federal funding to the programme.
The Silver Ring Thing says more than 30,000 young people have committed themselves to premarital purity after attending the programme's three-hour presentations.

Garage bars sex shop objectors
A garage has barred villagers campaigning against a sex shop which has opened in a back room.
Some began a petition to stop the New Toll Service Station on the A47 at Thorney Toll, near Wisbech, Cambs, selling saucy DVDs and adult toys.
Mother-of-two Jenny Dowsing said it was in the wrong place. Children used the garage to buy sweets, and there was an unofficial school bus stop nearby.
Manager Tyrone Ibrahim said they had made the shop as discreet as possible.
Mr Ibrahim said that only a couple of villagers had expressed concern about the sex shop.
He said the garage had been issued with a licence to sell adult material and steps had been taken to ensure children could not see any unsuitable products.
Mr Ibrahim said his family had owned the garage for more than 30 years and had always sold top-shelf magazines and videos.
He said: "All the items are kept in a separate room, and there is no danger children can get in there or even see in there.
"I am aware that a couple of the villagers are unhappy about it. I said that if they were not happy it would probably be best if they didn't come in.
"There is another garage on the other side of the road."

Oral sex caused car smash
Police in Romania were shocked to find a car crash was caused because a couple were having oral sex while driving.
The driver lost control on a crowded road in Craiova, Dolj county, and collided with an oncoming car, reports Editie Speciala newspaper.

Divorce is a piece of cake
A German baker has launched a new line - personalised divorce cakes.
Georgius Vasseliou's cakes have a large smiley face or a torn up photo of the 'ex' iced on to the top,
He sells them for between £30 and £100 at his Patisserie Cafe Lezard in Berlin.
Mr Vasseliou started the new range after a customer said she wanted something to celebrate her divorce.
"I thought it was a great idea. I developed the cakes further and now they are a standard part of our product range along with birthday and wedding cakes," he said.
With 10,245 divorces in Berlin alone last year, Mr Vasseliou believes he's on to something big.
"The whole divorce situation is bitter enough and so it makes sense to try to sweeten it up a bit. I think people will like the idea," he said.

Posters warn women of drink risk
Women are being warned to be aware of how much they drink, so as to avoid violent or risky situations.
A poster campaign by drinks lobby organisation the Portman Group shows a man lurking behind a woman, beneath the phrase "Who's looking out for you?"
The Portman Group said it wanted to emphasise to women the dangers of drinking too much - from losing valuables to being assaulted.
The posters will be in 500 pub toilets throughout the country next month.
The campaign warns of other potential dangers including getting into an unlicensed minicab, going home with a stranger and having unprotected sex.
Among young women aged 16-24, the proportion drinking more than 35 units per week has more than tripled over the past 15 years, rising from 3% to 10%, the Portman Group said.
Judgement affected
"Alcohol affects your judgement," said its chief executive Jean Coussins.
"You might think that taking that short cut or going home with a stranger is a good idea but you could be taking a huge risk."
Research showed that while most sexual assaults occur between people who know each other, alcohol-related sexual assaults are more likely to occur between people who do not know each other well.
Other alcohol research showed that more than one in five men and one in six women admit to having unsafe sex after drinking too much, according to Alcohol Concern.
One in seven 16 to 24 year olds have had unprotected sex when drunk, while one in five had sex they later regretted.
One in 10 have been unable to remember if they had sex the night before and 40% believe they are more likely to have casual sex after drinking.
The Portman Group includes Allied Domecq; Bacardi Brown Forman Brands; Beverage Brands; Carlsberg UK; Coors Brewers; Diageo; Interbrew UK; Pernod Ricard; and Scottish & Newcastle.
