Self Care: How to Get Lubed Naturally

Reaching for a tube of lube before sex could be a slippery proposition, especially if you're trying to get pregnant.
WHAT TO DO

Most lubricants contain perfumes and chemicals that change the acid balance in the vagina, which will affect the way sperm act. "I would not recommend using lubricants if you're trying to conceive, because we don't know to what degree lubricants damage sperm," says Alan Altman, M.D., professor of gynecology at Harvard Medical School and author of Making Love the Way We Used To -- or Better. "I find more women are reaching for lubricants because they are easier to use than the gloppy stuff of the past, and they are seen as helpful, not embarrassing." Women certainly have more options to choose from: In 1997, the San Francisco-based sexual resource center Good Vibrations offered 14 lubricants. Today, it carries more than 25. For women in their 20s and early 30s, the question is not whether you use lubricants, Altman says, but why do you need to? Beyond the issues of desire and arousal, recurring vaginal dryness among women in their reproductive prime could be a sign of a more serious problem with ovulation, which should give moisture levels a natural boost. Reaching for the slippery stuff before consulting your doctor could delay treatment of underlying causes of dryness.

For women over age 35 who are not looking to get pregnant and who find a little lube eases the way, leave the Wesson oil in the kitchen and petroleum-based Vaseline to lips: These solutions are breeding grounds for all sorts of bacteria. Instead, look for products that are water-based and as close in composition to your body's natural lubricants as possible. Altman recommends condom-safe Astroglide and KY Silk-e, which share the same acidic pH as the inside of the vagina. "Anything that changes the environment in the vagina opens the way for yeast infections," Altman says. "And if you really want natural, oral sex is a great lubricant."
